The origin of White Sage
Burning white sage has been well established as a Native American cultural or tribal practice, although it isn’t practiced by all groups. Their practice is called Smudging (and it’s why you won’t see me using that word at all). We have the traditions of many Native American peoples to thank for its use. This includes the Lakota, Chumash, Cahuilla, among others. Many other cultures around the world share similar rituals, such as the Australian aboriginals and eucalyptus, or South American shamas and palo santo. Each of these wands hold their own special purpose to each of their derived ancestors. When we use sage or other smoke wand tools, it is imperative that we first thank the origins of this ritual and honor it’s roots.
